Custom field information is added to jobs through the custom field tab in the Job Editor. To include custom fields on a job you must add them to the Job Template. vWork offers a variety of custom field types for you to use to complete jobs.
You can learn more about creating Job Templates in the article: Create a job template.
In this article
This article lists every custom field type that you can add to your Job Templates and then apply to Jobs. This expands on the information in the article: What are custom fields in jobs and job templates?
Each type of custom field has its own topic in this article. This includes:
- Free Text
- Image
- Date and Time
- Number
- URL
- Checkbox
- Currency
- Signature
- Location
- Pick Lists and Multi-value pick lists

Free Text
The Free Text custom field enables mobile app users and dispatchers to read, enter, and edit text for a job. This is useful for adding comments and notes, sharing information with mobile app users about a job, and attaching information to a job that is useful for dispatchers.
You can also use the Free Text custom field to scan a barcode on the vWork Mobile app. A barcode icon shows in the Free Text custom field. A mobile app user can tap this to open their camera and scan a barcode into the Free Text field.
This screenshot from the job template provides examples of how Free Text might be used.
Image
The Image custom field allows photos in .png and .jpg format and as PDF files to be added and viewed in a job. These are useful to capture proof of delivery and the condition of items at a job. They can also help mobile app users identify landmarks, and PDFs are often used to share technical diagrams.
This screenshot, from a job template, shows examples of how the Image custom field might be used.
Date and Time
The Date and Time custom field allows dispatchers and mobile app users to add dates and times to a job. This is useful to capture a requested date and time to schedule further work for a customer, or to record the date and time of a visit or inspection.
This screenshot from the job template shows examples of how the Date and Time custom field might be used.
Number
The Number custom field allows mobile app users or dispatchers to read, enter, and edit numbered items for a job. It is used to record any numerical value associated with a job, such as the temperature in a refrigerated appliance, the liquid level in a rain gauge, a gate code, or the number of items used on a job.
A valid entry in the Number custom field:
- may use any of the following characters:
-.0123456789. - but can’t have letters, symbols, or spaces.
This screenshot, from a job template, provides examples of how the Number custom field might be used.
URL
The URL custom field allows mobile app users or dispatchers to click a link that takes them to a web address or other online system. This is useful for accessing technical information stored in another system, or customer records that add to the information held in vWork but are stored in another system - such as confidential health records, or track flights through a flight-tracking website.
A valid format for a URL custom field:
- must begin with HTTP or HTTPS (eg, https://)
- must include a hostname (eg, www.example.com)
- may include a file name (/file.html)
Unlike other custom fields, there are only two types of permission that you use with the URL custom field; these are Hidden and Read Only.
This screenshot, from a Job Template, provides examples of how the URL custom field might be used.
Checkbox
The Checkbox custom field allows mobile app users or dispatchers to confirm they have completed a task or sited an item by completing a checkbox with a checkmark.
The Checkbox custom field can be used for creating simple checklists, or with Conditional Logic to enable other fields to be completed only when specific conditions are met. You can learn more about Conditional Logic in the article: Use conditional logic with custom fields.
This screenshot from a Job Template shows how the Checkbox custom field might be used.
Currency
The Currency custom field allows mobile app users to read, enter, and edit currency values. The currency unit used is the unit set in your vWork Finance settings.
A valid entry in the Currency custom field:
- may use any of the following characters:
-.0123456789. - but can’t have letters, symbols, or spaces.
This screenshot, from a Job Template, provides examples of how the Currency custom field might be used.
Signature
The Signature custom field enables a mobile app user to capture a signature on their mobile device by having the signee sign on the screen of the device in the Signature field. The mobile app user can also enter the name of the signee.
Unlike other custom fields, there are only two types of permission that you use with the Signature custom field: Optional, and Required.
This is an example of the Signature custom field in a Job Template.
Location
The Location custom field can be used to capture a location in a custom field, either as a street address or as a set of GPS coordinates. The location is identified with a pin on the map and a location description in the custom field in the vWork mobile app.
It is useful when mobile workers need to:
- record the specific location of a feature, such as a new tree planting or site hazard.
- find the location of something they need to work on at an address for a job or an asset saved with a job, such as a utility tower, manhole, or service meter.
When using the website, a valid format to use in the Location custom field is:
- A street address;
for example, 31 Princes Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland, 1010. Please ensure you pick an address from the list of suggestions if you want the address to be geocoded. - Latitude and Longitude coordinates without a set of brackets;
for example -36.84714,174.75513. These will automatically be converted to the closest street address. - Latitude and Longitude coordinates with a set of square brackets;
for example [-36.84714,174.75513]. These are converted to a street address but are saved and displayed as the raw coordinates. - For more information on supported coordinate formats, please refer to the article: Enter GPS Coordinates instead of a street address
When using the mobile app, supported methods of adding a location include:
- Searching for a specific street address.
- Using your current GPS location.
- Dropping a pin on the map.
🔔 Note: If you drop a pin on the map using the mobile app, we save the exact pin location for the map view, but default the field value to the nearest street address.
This is an example of the Location custom field used with the multi-value pick list custom field in a job.

Pick Lists and Multi-value Pick Lists
The Pick List and Multi-value Pick List custom fields both provide a drop-down list of items to select from when completing a field. The Pick List allows a single item to be selected and added to the field, whereas the Multi-value Pick List allows for multiple items to be selected from the list. These are great for quickly adding information on a job without requiring the mobile app user to manually type the information into a free text field.
Pick lists can be used with Conditional Logic to reveal additional fields when a specific pick list item is selected. You can learn more about Conditional Logic in the article: Use conditional logic with custom fields.
We provide you with a selection of pick lists that you can use as they are, or you can customize them to meet your requirements. You can also create your own pick lists that you can add to any job template. You can find out more about creating pick lists in the article: What are picklists and how do I use them?
Below is an example from a job, showing how pick lists might be used. The field named Landscape samples uses a multi-value pick list. The Multi-value pick list is displayed, in this example, because the dispatcher has clicked in the field to select items from the list. The mobile app user can also select items from this list to add to the field.
